SGI hires former Premier League player as head coach

Youth Football International (YFI), the football academy wing of Sporting Group International is proud to announce the appointment of UEFA A licensed and former EPL player Jerry Gill as Head Coach for its academy in Jalandhar, Punjab.

Gill, an English national, has over ten years of youth coaching experience training children from the age groups of 14 to 21 in the UK.  Before joining up with YFI Gill held coaching and managerial posts with Norwich City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Birmingham City and Bristol Rovers, and was instrumental in aiding the transition of several young players through to the First Team squad.

Before embarking on his coaching career, the former defender enjoyed an excellent career.  Earning a reputation in non-league football with Yeovil Town, he went on to sign for Birmingham City, helping them win promotion to the EPL.  After five years at Birmingham, he went on to enjoy stints in the EFL with Northampton Town and Cheltenham Town before retiring from playing in 2010.

Gill, who flew into India today, was excited at the prospect of joining with YFI and passing on his years of experience to India’s next generation of footballers:

“At this stage in my coaching career, I was looking for a new challenge and the opportunity arose from Sporting Group International and Adrian Wright, to experience an overseas project which I have never done before. The decision was made around experiencing a completely new culture and environment to coach in.

“Having known Adrian for several years, through our connections in Midlands football and once again catching up with him last year during my time at Wolverhampton Wanderers, we soon began to share ideas for our futures within football. At that point, Adrian explained his work with Sporting Group International in India, and he sold not only the company but the fantastic facilities at the American Embassy School, as well as the opportunity to set up a further academy in Jalandhar, Punjab.

“As Youth Football International is an established academy in Indian Football, I felt this is the perfect opportunity to broaden my coaching experience overseas. I am excited to start coaching with immediate effect alongside some very good coaches and working within the various age groups that the academy has to offer.”

Youth football International (YFI) has been running its academy at the American Embassy School for the past five years.  The organisation offers safe environment with the best facilities and coaching in the

Jalandhar area, utilizing the 3G artificial pitch during the evenings to avoid the oppressive Delhi daytime summer heat.

Gill will oversee the introduction and structure of the Academy, training children aged 11 to 18.  In addition to this, Gill will be conducting regular ‘Coach the Coaches programme’.

Speaking on this appointment Adrian Wright, CEO Sporting Group International, said:

"I am delighted that we have secured the services of Jerry.  He will continue with our aim in hiring quality European coaches to complement our existing coaching infrastructure at YFI.

“Jerry will be the fourth international coach hired by Sporting Group International in offering coaching services in India.  We strongly believe children need to develop their football skills. We have many students at the academy who are keen to take up football as a career. While we have the best facilities, it is just as important to provide the best in terms of coaching skills available. To this end, we can proudly state, that YFI provides optimal conditions for the nurturing of rising talent.”

“We have a busy and exciting period ahead of us and wish all concerned a good season.”
